Necklace Length Guide: Choker, Princess, Matinee & Opera Explained

Necklace length names sound like fashion jargon, but they're really just a simple size guide — and knowing them makes shopping (and layering) much easier.

Choker: ~35–40cm

Sits snugly at the base of the neck. Chokers are a strong styling choice with crew necks, off-shoulder tops, and layered looks, since they create a clean first "layer" closest to the collarbone.

Princess: ~45cm

The most versatile length, sitting just at or slightly below the collarbone. It works with almost any neckline, which is why it's usually the length people reach for as an everyday, one-necklace piece.

Matinee: ~50–60cm

Falls between the collarbone and the bust. Matinee length is a popular middle layer in a layered stack — long enough to sit below a princess-length piece, short enough to still show.

Opera: ~70–90cm

A long, dramatic length that sits well below the bust, often long enough to be doubled for a different look entirely. Opera length pieces work well both worn long over simple outfits and wrapped for a shorter, layered effect.

How to Pick the Right Length

For a single everyday necklace, princess length is the safest, most flattering choice for most necklines. For layering, pick two or three lengths at least 5–10cm apart — a choker with a matinee piece, for example — so they sit distinctly rather than overlapping.
