How to Clean and Care for Your Pearl & Gold-Filled Jewelry

Pearls and gold-filled jewelry are both low-maintenance compared to a lot of fine jewelry — but a few wrong habits can shorten their lifespan fast. Here's how to actually take care of both.

Caring for Pearls

Pearls are organic and softer than most gemstones, so they need slightly gentler handling. Put pearls on last, after perfume, hairspray, and lotion, since the chemicals in these products can dull their natural luster over time. Wipe pearls with a soft, slightly damp cloth after wearing them to remove oils and product residue, and store them flat or in a soft pouch rather than tangled with other jewelry, since pearls can scratch more easily than metal.

Can Pearls Get Wet?

A little moisture (like light rain) won't damage pearls, but you should avoid swimming or showering in them. Chlorine in particular can damage the nacre layer over time, and prolonged water exposure can weaken the silk thread many pearls are strung on.

Caring for Gold-Filled Jewelry

Gold filled jewelry is considerably more durable than gold plated, but it still benefits from basic care. Remove it before swimming, showering, or applying lotion and perfume directly to the piece, and wipe it down with a soft cloth after wear. If it loses some shine over time, a gentle polish with a jewelry cloth (not an abrasive cleaner) will usually restore it.

What to Avoid

Skip ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemical jewelry cleaners on both pearls and gold-filled pieces — they can damage nacre and strip or dull the gold-filled layer over time. Avoid tossing pieces loosely in a drawer where they can scratch against each other; a soft pouch or lined jewelry box is a better home between wears.

Storing Between Wears

Keep pieces separated, away from direct sunlight and humidity, and ideally in the pouch they arrived in. A little care goes a long way — with reasonable handling, gold-filled findings and freshwater pearls can both last for decades.
