At its most honest, handmade means a person made the object with their hands and hand tools, rather than a machine producing it automatically at scale. The key marker is human judgment at every stage — decisions made by eye and hand, not stamped out identically by the thousand.
The word becomes marketing-speak when it is stretched to cover pieces that were mostly machine-produced and only "hand-assembled" at the very end, or "hand-finished" with a single final touch. There is a real spectrum here, and the honest brands tell you where on it they sit.

The journey of a NÙA piece
To make the difference concrete, here is how one of our necklaces comes to be. It starts with selecting the materials — choosing baroque pearls, shells and stones, each with its own shape and colour. Then the artisan designs the arrangement, balancing the piece by eye so it sits and hangs correctly. Next comes stringing and assembly by hand, followed by attaching the 14k gold filled or sterling silver clasp. Finally, each piece is checked and finished before it is sent. Every step happens in our Balinese workshop, in human hands — the opposite of a component dropping off a production line.
Why handmade costs more
Handmade jewelry is more expensive for straightforward reasons: it takes skilled human time, it uses better materials, and it is made in small quantities rather than at mass scale. You are paying for the hours of a trained artisan, for pearls and gold filled rather than plastic and plating, and for the fact that the piece was made specifically, not stamped out by the thousand.
Whether that is "worth it" depends on what you want. If you want a disposable accessory for one season, mass production is cheaper. If you want a piece that lasts years, stays unique, and can be passed on, the handmade premium buys something real.
Made-to-order: sustainable by design
There is one more difference worth naming. Much mass-produced jewelry is made speculatively — manufactured in bulk, then discounted or discarded if it does not sell. That deadstock is one of the least visible forms of waste in the industry. Made-to-order production, which is how we largely work, flips that: nothing is made until someone wants it. No overstock, no landfill, no guessing. It is slower, but it wastes far less.
How to tell genuine handmade from marketing
Ask specific questions. Where is it made, and by whom? What exactly are the materials? Is it made to order or held in bulk stock? Can slight variations be expected between pieces? Brands making genuinely handmade jewelry can answer these easily, because the answers are a source of pride rather than something to hide.
